p.s. I totally fail at being Irish
Apr. 4th, 2006 05:25 pmI totally get, like, a D minus at my ethnicity. In my defense, I'm only half Irish, despite the name.
One of Z's coworkers kindly contributed a collection of music by the Pogues when I admitted I had nothing of theirs in my record collection. And remember how I wasn't all that fond of Jackdaw (but am reserving final judgement until I can see them live or, you know, listen to a decent recording)?
I so totally don't appreciate the Pogues. A couple of their songs are okay, but for the most part? Dude, being Irish doesn't mean you should always sing flat. And also doesn't mean you should always sound drunk. Really.
This song, when done by the Clancy Brothers, is a little schmaltzy, but makes me cry. Done by the Pogues, it makes me hit the "skip" button. He messes up the lyrics! And it's not even live! And I'm sorry, "arse over teats" doesn't rhyme with "hospital bed". It's a long song and a bit monotonous and he entirely fails to keep it from droning. This takes over as Worst Cover Ever.
I so totally fail at being Irish. I think I have to change my name and study up on my Stodgy Puritan past, because I totally lose.
Not that I hate all their songs, but man...
(If the Pogues' piper leaves a comment I'm totally going to die.)
