I actually have a full, philosophical post brewing somewhere about gender difference, stirred up somewhere in comments with [livejournal.com profile] tehta, but at the moment I'm just reflecting on the fact that I'm just not capable of running a quick errand. I really can't.
Well, it's not that I can't, but I really have trouble.
Mostly I just don't like to go somewhere for just one thing. I generally like to wait and do a couple things at once, just because I hate to waste the gas/time/trip. I sort of have this weird efficiency thing that makes me incapable of actually doing anything...
I blame growing up someplace that was at least half an hour's drive from anywhere. I do very, very vividly remember my first experience with the concept of the "corner store". I was at Ursula's house in Glasgow, and we were baking cookies, and we only had one egg and we needed two, and I was so sad and upset because we didn't have enough. "I'll run to the store," Ursula said.
"But your folks aren't home," I said. "The car's not here."
She laughed, and took me to the front bay window, and pointed out sideways down the street. "That store," she said. "Right there. You make the rest of it and I'll bring you back an egg."
Blew my mind.
Absolutely blew my mind.

The nearest store where I grew up was three miles, as the crow flies. I walked there once or twice, took a bike once, skiied once, and actually rode my horse once, but it wasn't something you'd just do, mid-recipe. (And no, it was not the kind of town where you just rode horses around. I got a WHOLE LOT of REALLY odd looks. But I needed milk, dammit, and couldn't drive.)

But I digress. I have the car today, and Z missed the bus by twenty feet, so I had to drive him to work, but I couldn't just drive him there and then come home-- no, that would be inefficient. So I stopped by the grocery store and the hardware store and spent $50.
$1.50 for the bus would've been way cheaper, but hey, I now have fresh bagels .

Sounds efficient to me.

As you may have recently noticed, I like to get everything done at once from the direction I'm going. Anything else is not only a waste of gas, but a waste of the time needed to get there and back.
