things, geeks
Feb. 26th, 2006 11:06 pmSpent today helping Z with the Geek Meet, which turned out to be nice, but as inexplicable as ever. I still have no real idea what it was about. Geeks, Buffalo, the confluence thereof? Sure. Whatever.
The event was a success, although if any planning at all had been devoted to it, it might have gone better. (Don't blame Z. The whole thing was his boss's idea, and then it was all, "So, Z, this problem, how are you going to solve it?" "This what? What now? Where?" at high speeds. So, yeah.) It didn't go badly, it was just much less elaborate than they'd envisioned-- which was just about fine. It will probably be repeated, although perhaps not allll that frequently. What was neat was to watch all the various online presences of Buffalo finally meet one another in the flesh. Lots of calling out of screen names and exclamations of astonishment. It was kinda funny. Also the guy from elmwoodstrip.org was blogging the setup in realtime so when he gave his presentation and pulled up his site there was a photo of the sign-in sheet on his webpage, which gave us all a laugh. (He has a mobile phone PDA thing with an excellent camera in it.)
I've been feeling uneven today, uncomfortable, edgy, but at least the three days of intermittent abdominal pain have finally (dramatically, ugh) resolved themselves into the not-entirely-unexpected mundane female issue that they really (checks calendar) ought to be. So all is right with the world but that doesn't mean I have to like it.
I'm feeling bloggy too, so here are links:
OMG Octavia Butler is dead!!! She was one of those authors who sort of crosses genres-- let me just say that I read one of her books in college but I can't remember whether it was for my Science Fiction class, my African History class, or my Alien Sex (women's studies) class. Also when I went to buy the book I couldn't find it because they had it filed under something entirely else. So... as I recall, the book wasn't a great read in the sense of what I usually look for, but holy heavens did it give me a lot to think about.
Actually I think I had two different books of hers assigned in two different classes...
kkatowll on friendship: Good points.
Oh yes: Paul from Elmwood Strip blogs the geek meet. (permalink to that particular entry.)
Bzuh I am so sleepy. I want to write more but I am too sleepy. Bah.
