So I just went out to retrieve our recycling bin from the curb, where last night's strong gusting rattling irritating winds had taken it. Standing at my curb, I noticed that not a single car was parked on my street.
This is odd, as there's a high school directly I mean directly across the street, and they don't have a student parking lot, so it's a zoo on our street usually. I scratched my head and thought of what holiday it could possibly be, but drew a blank.

I came back inside and there was an IM from Z, informing me that all the area schools were closed, and apparently Buffalo is facing a possible seiche. A what? A seiche. Basically an inland tsunami.

Sweet! Wonder if I've got flood insurance.

I'd drive to higher ground, as I have the car today, except that, well, there isn't any: this is Western New York, folks. We don't have hills.

It's OK: I've stocked up on canned goods. We'll be fine, FEMA.
*goes to fill all the water bottles*

I know, I know, I shouldn't mock those who've had real disasters, I just think it's wildly entertaining in a sort of direly-grim sort of way to be worrying about this sort of thing in... Buffalo.

Hm, according to the National Weather Service, it probably won't be dire. Still. Wow. File that one under "Huh?" perils. WTF are you thinking, Lake Erie?

Oh, apparently the schools aren't closed because of the "slosh" (apparently the more common Great Lakes term for the phenomenon), but rather because the weather is otherwise inhospitable to life, i.e. extremely windy and snowy. To that I say WUSSES. You don't KNOW what bad weather is!

In other other news, I've managed over 1,000 words already this morning so I am officially Teh Cool. I will certainly keep everyone posted on how Cool I am, once I've finished filling all my water bottles and moving my electronics to the attic.

Buffalo are not WUSSES!!!

I'm sorry, as a lifelong Buffaloman (that could totally be a superhero - BUFFALOMAN!!!! - My superpower would be to fuck up civic projects), I must say that us Buffalonians are not WUSSES...... Wait until there is the 3 feet of snowfall in one day!! Unfortunately, whenever that happens, the Weather Channel or some major network says, "And look at Buffalo - look at all that snow", but when New York City gets 2 feet of snow, they never say "Sunny, 50 degrees in Buffalo". Fuckers..... But anyway.. We ain't wussies. Unfortunately we have burned into our heads Thanksgiving 5 years ago when everybody left work at the same time, and thousands of people had to spend the night at McDonalds...

Ah well...

Hey, we were driving up the 190 and, uh, the H-O Oats grain elevator is still there. What the hell did the Senecas tear down??!!

They tore down the adjacent building. They are actually soliciting plans to keep the elevators and convert them into hotel rooms.

BTW..

I mean Buffalonians are not Wusses, not Buffalo.. Although I would not have the guts to tell a Buffalo that it was a wuss.

Wow. I've lived along the shores of Lake Michigan my entire life and have never heard of a "slosh". If we did have one, though, I'd feel rather smug at the thought of those rich bastards who own lakefront property - especially in Glencoe - having their mansions float down to Gary, Indiana.

Yeah, I'd never heard of it either...

That would be kind of funny, in an evil sort of way.
