omg localized panic
Feb. 17th, 2006 10:07 amSo I just went out to retrieve our recycling bin from the curb, where last night's strong gusting rattling irritating winds had taken it. Standing at my curb, I noticed that not a single car was parked on my street.
This is odd, as there's a high school directly I mean directly across the street, and they don't have a student parking lot, so it's a zoo on our street usually. I scratched my head and thought of what holiday it could possibly be, but drew a blank.
I came back inside and there was an IM from Z, informing me that all the area schools were closed, and apparently Buffalo is facing a possible seiche. A what? A seiche. Basically an inland tsunami.
Sweet! Wonder if I've got flood insurance.
I'd drive to higher ground, as I have the car today, except that, well, there isn't any: this is Western New York, folks. We don't have hills.
It's OK: I've stocked up on canned goods. We'll be fine, FEMA.
*goes to fill all the water bottles*
I know, I know, I shouldn't mock those who've had real disasters, I just think it's wildly entertaining in a sort of direly-grim sort of way to be worrying about this sort of thing in... Buffalo.
Hm, according to the National Weather Service, it probably won't be dire. Still. Wow. File that one under "Huh?" perils. WTF are you thinking, Lake Erie?
Oh, apparently the schools aren't closed because of the "slosh" (apparently the more common Great Lakes term for the phenomenon), but rather because the weather is otherwise inhospitable to life, i.e. extremely windy and snowy. To that I say WUSSES. You don't KNOW what bad weather is!
In other other news, I've managed over 1,000 words already this morning so I am officially Teh Cool. I will certainly keep everyone posted on how Cool I am, once I've finished filling all my water bottles and moving my electronics to the attic.
