good news!
Jan. 9th, 2006 07:30 amMy cellphone ringing just woke me up. It's not yet light here, although upon reflection, it's not really that early.
I answered it, briefly glancing at the caller ID: "HOME". That's mom and dad.
Dad on the phone. "I just wanted to let you know," he said, and his tone of voice was hard to read, "that Katy just called from Georgia."
"Georgia," I said, processing fuzzily. "Georgia!"
"She just arrived home. Via Baghdad, Kuwait, Germany, and Bangor, Maine."
"But she's home now."
"Yes. Totally exhausted, but very, very happy."

Date: 2006-01-09 05:48 pm (UTC)We ran a story awhile back about the airport in Maine -- apparently a lot of the returning soldiers switch planes there, or the planes get refueled, or something, so they're there for half an hour waiting around before they can get to really go home. Anyway, there's a group that always come out to meet every plane -- even in the middle of the night. Sometimes the group gets called by the airport only a half hour before the plane arrives. But they rush over, decorate, cheer, and give the soldiers cake and cookies sometimes. Ask Katy if they were there for her, I wonder what she thought of them.

Date: 2006-01-09 05:52 pm (UTC)Dad told a rather horrifying story-- he said he was glad to hear at the last minute that she was coming via Germany, because some time ago apparently a plane carrying back returning soldiers had come straight from Kuwait or something and had crashed in Labrador. I was confused by his story, however, so am not conversant with the details, or what that was supposed to mean. Still, I am haunted by the thought of that sort of plane crash. "You've just survived a war! Good luck getting home."
However, yes, I know that Bangor, Maine has an absolutely tremendous runway and so they're host to all sorts of wacky international landings. The latest issue of Z's magazine is basically a big rant about how the Niagara Falls air force base's disused Ginormous Runway would be such a boon to the region...

Date: 2006-01-09 06:18 pm (UTC)Oh, I sent you a card, and I got it back a couple days ago-- the Seattle postmark stamp at the bottom simply said "RETURN TO WRITER" and offered no explanation. I sent it on the 20th to the address you used to address the one you sent me! And so I don't know why it got returned. :/

Date: 2006-01-09 06:26 pm (UTC)I copied you and put a link on my profile to my contact info post...so, if you wanna double check... Even if you mistook the city, or even the way the road is spelled, the zip code usually gets it to me...You should see all the ways people spell my address!
Thank you for the card in any case! Is APO the one in Texas? If it is, I think I sent it after that. Oh well, my mushy thanks to her and her friends for spending Christmas in Iraq will get read by someone eventually and they'll laugh at the sentimental emo I am!
