What passing-bells for these who die as cattle?
- Only the monstrous anger of the guns.
Only the stuttering rifles' rapid rattle
Can patter out their hasty orisons.

(Owen, Anthem for Doomed Youth)

I picked up a poppy pin that had fallen on the floor of the restaurant, and upon realizing that Asshole Ubermanager wasn't in today, pinned it to my work vest in defiance of the ban on personal bits of flair on our uniforms. (I stuck the pin right through the stupid embroidered martini glass. I'm sick of that goddamned thing.)

I am in a bit of a morose mood, and am homesick. Such is November. I made no money today, failed to find anyone to work for me tomorrow afternoon so I can see my sister, utterly failed to find anything to be cheerful about, etc. Also, stuck myself with the pin on the poppy as I was undressing, which made me feel pretty stupid.

I would post about Veteran's Day, but I can't think of much to say. I'm still in a bit of shock about two of my sister's coworkers getting blown up last week, and am also in a bit of shock about the fact that when I confided in one of my coworkers about how upset it made me, he replied with a sermon about how important it was to stay the course in Iraq. That's not what this is about, asshole: this is me worrying about my sister. I didn't say anything about your precious President, so go fuck yourself. Which is about the mood I'm in.

I think I'll just link to my Veteran's Day post from last year. Scroll down to the comments to see the redeeming coolness about it: I couldn't top something like that anyway, if I tried.
Part of the point, in fact, is that I identified the men in the photos and then didn't say which one was which.

I'm sorry to hear the news about your sister's co-workers. It's certainly understandable that you'd worry; I would too. And thanks for the link to last year's post. That is indeed very cool.

Your V-day observations are eloquent. A lot of people don't have any connection to a veteran these days. It's easy to just see it as a day we don't get mail or have to feed the parking meters. When it's personal it's a whole different subject.

Thank you for linking back to the other one. You're right, it would be hard to top.

I remember your posting it last year, even though I didn't comment then. I read it before the other comments came in, though. Kudos, for the connections made.

You're so right about Veterans' Day - it's a time to remember those lost to war, not to argue politics.
