Absolutely bizarre day at work:
The airport was closed for over an hour because, check this out, we had no runway lights.
Yes. No runway lights.
And, the airlines DID NOT TELL THEIR PASSENGERS what was going on. People were checking in, going to their gates, seeing a delay of maybe half an hour, and coming into the bar, where I was explaining to them what was going on-- I, who was getting this info thirdhand from people who'd spoken to airline employees (I did go into the US Air Club to find out directly, but beyond that was dependent utterly on the rumor mill)-- and I'm serious, they were sitting there with mouths hanging open, asking if I was kidding. "Go look out the window," I'd say, and sure enough, they'd come back, "holy shit, there are no runway lights."
Durr.
Now why the fuck the airline employees, who HAVE RADIOS, couldn't say anything, I don't know, but I finally heard that a "Us Air employee" had told the bartender at the bar at gate 20 (US Air doesn't fly out of any gates higher than 10, so it had to have been American or Northwest or possibly Delta), but the guy down there's pretty new and doesn't know the difference) that the lights were back on and their flights were rescheduled 45 minutes later. It was bizarre, and surreal, and I wanted to get out and go home and they wouldn't let me. It wasn't busy, but I did get charmed half to death by a trio of boys from Co. Meath Ireland who actually left a largeish tip, to my astonishment, so it wasn't all in vain.

Meanwhile, came home to an inbox full of various things. One was a sad email from Katy that I'm reposting here.

Hello, family -
This weekend's been pretty rough for my battalion. We've been doing pretty well, as far as getting hit goes with a couple close calls, but Friday was a bad day. We had two Soldiers - the first from our Battalion - die, and two were seriously wounded from an IED set up. Have you heard the news people talking about EFPs? They're the new thing - a shape charge that can defeat our good armored equipment. One of the Soldiers that died was CPT Jim Gurbisz, our security platoon leader, and Dawn's good friend from West Point. He's the only person, aside from maybe the battalion commander, who touched EVERYONE in the BN in some way - we've all gone on convoys with him at some time or other. His wife is back in GA - no kids, for better or worse - but they've been together since they were 15. And the other was PFC Yancey - he actually drove me all the way up from Kuwait on the way here - who looked like he might make it, but obviously was too seriously injured. So, it's bee
n a difficult couple of days - we're fortunate that this is the first time we've lost anyone, compared to the maneuver battalions - but we're almost home!! I'm sure I'll write more in a letter, but I just wanted to let you know. I'll try to call today sometime, too. I love you all!
Love,
Katy

And the other was an email from Mom full of adorable pictures of Scout, who was lying out in the sun on the patio and a mouse was rustling in the dead leaves and every once in a while she'd get up and literally tiptoe over to pounce on it.

I would post them here but LJ has subtly reorganized their menus. Where the fuck is my scrapbook? Where the fuck are the photos I've been posting up here for months? What the fuck? It was in the "journal" submenu, wasn't it? Christ. Not like you can find it on the useless portal page either. What the fuck?
I hate website redesigns. All right, fuck it. I was going to post cute puppy pictures but LJ has denied me. I am too tired to track down where the fuck they've hidden the link I want now. Oh boy, it's been moved up. Whatever. Now I'm too pissed off from hunting through all of the very-subtly-changed submenus to manage their useless upload dialogue thing. Like anyone would ever write a client for OS X. Because we're so fucking obscure. Right.

Hostile much? YOU try working in an airport. And reading about the gory and gruesome deaths of your sister's coworkers. What a fucking life this is.

I noticed on the blue bar style page thingy that it says "Scrapbook" and if you toggle it, it says UPLOAD and manage...but I don't know how you view LJ...and they have separate clients for uloading pics...

And, I'll pray for your sister's safety!
