Ho hum.

Monday morning, back to work. Today Z has to be down at the arena for the mayoral debate, making sure the streaming video works-- but he's just done the math and if more than 8 people try to view it, the server will die. So it is by definition futile, but he soldiers on.

Yesterday afternoon I was a behemoth of productivity. I ran errands like a mofo, and then I cooked as I have not cooked in a long while. I made bread, from scratch, by hand, and since the house was so cold I had to put it on the dryer while I finished the laundry so that it could rise. (I then put it *in* the dryer after I'd shut it off, because dryers retain heat a long time.) I used about 1/3 whole wheat flour, so it came out nice and toothsome but not dry, and consequently is much better than when I usually make bread. I was very pleased by how it turned out. It was also easier than I remember it being. I think it's because I cheated and added a little bit of olive oil before I added flour.

I also made a lasagna, a giant batch of chili using the last of the scraps from our garden (the tiniest green pepper you've ever seen...), and apple crisp, but I made a small batch light on the apples and heavy on the crisp, and used a bit of bacon fat in with the butter. I am a weirdo that way.

No, I didn't have any time to write, or to think about writing, or to decide about this coming month. I want to write something, want desperately to do so, but I haven't caught up on housework from my Month Of No Days off, and didn't get as much done this weekend as I'd hoped. i also didn't get a goddamn nap, and am very tired, and think perhaps I'm coming down with something. Which sucks.

I also bought a pumpkin. I'm not quite sure what to do with it. It's sitting on the porch where I removed the Basket Full O' Dead Bean Vines (which was just getting to look nice and creepy, but it was depressing me). I may carve it, but when would I have the time?

And finally last night while the house was warmed by the oven I tried on Halloween costumes. It's years since I ever bought anything on purpose for a costume-- but then it's years since I wore one. So this year I think I'm going as a cigarette girl-- I just need some candy cigarettes and some mints and the like. I'll hit the convenience store on the corner tomorrow, and hope they have them, because otherwise I'll have to buy real cigarettes and that would be a bummer. (I guess I could just get candy and go as the candy girl...) I also need a pillbox hat and don't really know how to make one.

I also got Z into a Halloween costume. It's sort of depressing how skinny he is. He'll be wearing one of my skirts, pinned up so it actually fits him, and one of my old bras stuffed with something (we need suggestions on what will work better than old socks) and one of my blouses tied up to show his midriff, and a pair of my knee socks, and some of my jewelry, and he looks really distressingly like a Catholic schoolgirl fan of Britney Spears who has incidentally gone horribly wrong. He also hasn't shaved in over a week, so...
He instinctively knew how to sit in a short skirt, though.

He's kind of way more attractive from the back, in that outfit. I do hope he confuses at least one drunk frat boy.

My husband did something like that shortly after we met. He used my harem girl costume with tights which we stuffed to give him some shape. I remember a guy tapping him on the shoulder while we were dancing, and then the look of horror on the guys face when Dale turned around and he saw the beard.

Z says he's planning on flirting with all the boys. I think that would be really funny.
