"Hi, this is Bridget Kelly and I'm a freelance writer working with [alternative newsweekly]*..."
So yes, I am writing the article.
So. Does anybody live in a leaky old Buffalo house and wonder how they're going to get through this awful awful heating season? (*blinks innocently at

* I'm retaining my deliberate policy of not using the paper's name because it would absolutely suck to Dooce someone else.
Not that I expect to have anything bad to say about it, per se, but perhaps Z's revelation that his predecessor used to smoke weed in the warehouse with half of one of the other departments while on the job would possibly be connoted as "bad" by some people.

Date: 2005-10-04 04:06 pm (UTC)Um ... about the heating. I'm currently paying $300 a month on budget - in other words year round. Double that? Impossible. Unless we stop eating.
It's a big house, but with the number of people living in it, I can't even cut off rooms to let stay cold. Currently my sister has most of the second floor as an apartment and my daughter has the attic. The main floor is so open than most rooms literally can't be closed off.
And are any of these people going to remember to close doors and curtains? Ha! But use of electric blankets will be mandatory.
The only saving grace is that, due to the renovations after the fire, nearly everything is insulated. I suspect, however, that I will be covering the windows with tinfoil. Desperate action in the winter when there isn't enough sunlight anyway, but important to conserve every bit of heat possible.

I would love to turn this into a career but they can't afford me so I'm doing this for free at the moment, which means I need to keep my other job. But-- it can't hurt to have a publishing credit, for now, and possibly more in the future.
I harbor a secret desire to become a columnist.
