I was tired, and so I cozied myself down on the couch on the porch and snuggled in the blankets and zonked out for a few minutes, thinking perhaps a quick nap before Z came home was in order. I did only sleep about six hours last night, so it wouldn't be lazy of me.

Phone rings.
It's someone trying to fax us.

Somewhat over a year ago, someone else had our number, and it was for their fax.

The phone is off the hook now, because the fax machine has been redialing. If only we had caller ID I'd fax them FUCK YOU, but we don't.
Recent legislation means we no longer have to have a landline phone number through Verizon in order to get our DSL.
So we're not going to. All we ever get are wrong-number faxes, and those often repeat and repeat.

Someone remind me in a couple hours, tho, that I've got the phone off the hook...

I used to work answering phones at my wife's office. We'd constantly get wrong-number faxes, because our telephone number was one digit off our fax number. And most fax machines are set to redial seven times. I'd get as far as saying, "Good afternoon, thank you for-" before a shrill fax beep sounded in my ear. And the best part was, we had no call display, and I had no choice but to answer the phone every time, in case it was a client on the line. Good times, those.

... I was taught to use a fax machine only a couple years ago, by the receptionist at my last job. And the way I was taught to use a fax is, you pick up the handset, dial the number, listen for the first beep, and then push the button — precisely because it could be the wrong number. Apparently me and Sophy are the only two people in the entire universe who use fax machines that way.

That's how I was taught, too.

Interesting. Can you do it that way with a home printer/fax machine? It would be good to know that I'm actually going to a real fax machine, but I don't know that I can dial with the phone and then press the fax button on the printer.

If nothing else you should be able to hit "stop" on the fax machine if someone answers instead of a machine. This requires you to stand there instead of programming it and walking away.

If your fax machine has a handset, then you really should be able to use it before sending the fax. After you load up the input tray, you pick up the handset, dial the phone number, and listen for a beep. After you hear the beep, you can push the button and hang up the handset. Most machines will let you do this so that you could e.g. navigate a voice-mail system to get to the other fax machine's extension. I'd recommend giving this a shot, because if it turns out it's us you've accidently called, I'm very likely to reach right through the God-damned telephone and drag you back through the telephone network by whatever body part happens to be closest to the machine - and neither of us would want that. If you fax machine doesn't have a handset, then I guess you've gotta take your chances. (-:
