dragonlady7: self-portrait but it's mostly the DSLR in my hands in the mirror (hamsterCheeks)

My mom and dad, as I may have mentioned, got a digital camera for their anniversary from Katy, who is, of course, The Good Child.
They have figured out how to use it. They are smart people, of course, but of couse as with anyone over, say, fifty, who hasn't worked with computers, it's always a challenge to deal with these newfangled kinds of things that, I must admit, get harder and harder for me as I myself get older. (That came out condescending but no seriously, my new camera kicks my ass after six months of trying to figure it out. I'm Too Old For This already.)
Dad in particular is very cute with technology. He's just about mastered typing. That sounds condescending too, but I'm serious-- he can't touch-type, but he's getting really fast now with the hunting and pecking. (His job was mostly not behind a desk. Now that he's retired... well, he's writing a book, although he doesn't realize it yet. He just wrote 20,000 words explaining Vietnam to his unit's medic, to help the poor fellow with PTSD; now the children of his KIA first sergeant are asking about Vietnam and he's working on what amounts to the book's second draft. Dad's writing a book. The first draft was for someone who was there who doesn't remember; this draft is for someone who wasn't there, and I think he ought to publish it. It would be both awesome and depressing if he managed to publish a book before I did.)

Anyhow. They have figured out how to send digital photos through e-mail, which I must say was a daunting task involving absolutely no help from any of their children, all of whom reside at least 200 miles from home. Their technique isn't perfect-- the photos are huge but low-res, and next time I'm home I might work on setting up something to resize the photos for them-- but it works, so all is well.

Mom just sent Easter photos. (Edit: are now up on Livejournal. Easter Photos from Mom.)
1) Scout is so goddamn cute.
2) Fiona's new coat is so goddamn cute.
3) In the photo of the Easter table: a) the jellybean centerpiece is precious, b) as is the fact that Uncle Peter, seated too far from anyone to cause trouble, is giving himself bunny ears.
4) Dad made Mom an Easter present. He carved her a woodpecker*. It's beautiful. My dad's a sculptor. Who knew?

* It's a downy woodpecker, with authentic conformation and markings. While out walking, Mom and Dad discovered a broken bit of a fallen tree that had a perfect downy woodpecker hole in it. They salvaged the piece of wood and brought it home. Dad mounted it for hanging, and carved the woodpecker to be posed with it. It's kind of... found art, and folk art all in one. Except that the bird is too beautiful and accurate to be folk art. (But technically, it is: Dad's got his MBA to be sure, but never studied art, so that's Folk Art right there!)

So I have got to fix me my website so I can post more pictures. The bird is not to be missed.
