Dyngus Day
Mar. 29th, 2005 04:30 pmSo yeah, the day after Easter is a big deal in Buffalo. Dyngus Day in the Buffalo News.
Nobody I've ever spoken to who is actually Polish* has ever heard of the part where the girls beat the boys with pussy willows. The dousing others in water thing is apparently fairly universal, but in the old country, the pussy willows are just decorative.
Anyhow.
Dave and I have resolved that we are indeed going to cross international borders tonight in a quest for good Chinese food. Chinadian food, in fact. So we're going to Happy Jack's in Ontario.
Apparently it's kinda old-fashioned and a nice restaurant, and has a real old-fashioned tiki bar in it, so I'm excited. Me and my real nylons-with-the-seam-up-the-back are going to have an outing. I've even trimmed and painted my scary fingernails. It'll be fun. I'm so totally leaving the house. And the country. Yay!
______
* I admit that my representative sample is smallish: two programmers from my old job, and then a couple people on my lj friends' list. And Poland is large. Also, most of the Poles in Buffalo came here a while ago (many even pre-WWII), so it's possible that the beatings are an old tradition that only survives here. I tell you, the anchorwoman on the local TV news looked mighty pleased with her bundle of pussy willows, is all I gots to say about that.
