Dave took me on a little tour of our liquor cabinet and i am pleased to say that the headache of going on two days has almost entirely disappeared now. I still can't turn my eyes at all, but you'd be amazed how much you can get done while staring straight ahead. Another discovery: Southern Comfort is tasty when drunk neat while one is also eating chocolate chips straight out of the bag. No, I am not at all a sad bastard.
(Also: Chivas Regal is tasty when sipped after finishing a Bass. The scotch tastes almost... sweet. It's a really honeyish aftertaste, laid over the slightly-bitter beer.)
But of course I got all maudlin about Irish history, as I am somewhat prone to doing. I was a bit of a, well, I bordered on Fenian in high school, though I never went so far as to send money to Sinn Fein or anything like that. (I think I backed Fianna Fail in the '97 elections, though I don't remember their platform now.) Mostly I was just rabid about people blaming the entirety of the Troubles on the IRA without knowing anything about it. (They'd go on about the latest bombings, but if I brought up the events of the previous 12th July they'd just look blank. Come on! If you're going to take a stand on an issue at least have a nodding familiarity with it! Their eyes usually glazed over before I got to Long Kesh.)
And I considered drunkenly breaking out some of the Irish Songs of Rebellion I learned off that Clancy Bros. CD of my dad's (though I do have a scratchy audio tape of my long-deceased grandfather singing Kevin Barry-- that link, while it contains lyrics that differ from the ones I learned, amuses me because it's the BBC-- how times have changed). I didn't, though, because Dave doesn't appreciate that. But if anyone wants, when Dave is next not asleep I'll make a PhonePost of me (perhaps not drunkenly but I'll do my best) performing something Irish and probably quite cheesy. Shall I make a poll?
Oh sure.
Keep in mind that "Ireland is a land of happy wars and sad love songs", and so I only know those two kinds-- happy Tragic Songs Of Failed Rebellion, or sad songs of failed loves. (Also: I know way more than these. Try me sometime. But ply me first with booze.)
