dragonlady7: self-portrait but it's mostly the DSLR in my hands in the mirror (hellpp)

A Conservative Christian's case for civil same-sex unions. Fascinating stuff. This person shares my views on religion in politics-- what a revelation. (I just pasted this in here a while ago and it has nothing to do with the rest of this entry.)

In entirely other news:

Dave and I sat and had dinner together, as we get to do so seldom of late. I mentioned, pleased, that I'd received a review of something I'd written (the Valentine's Porn, in fact), wherein the reviewer had praised my dense language and avoidance of romance-novel cliches. I attempted to explain just what in the review had pleased me. Dave nodded thoughtfully.

"So," he said, summing up, "you have the airy lightness of Conrad, the brevity of Tolstoy, and the depth of Danielle Steele."

I laughed for about five minutes. He's so supportive. I love that boy.

He spent much of today thinking of ways to engineer partitions in our 20-gallon vertical (hex) fishtank so that we could put all three of the betta fish we now have into it, so they could have better water quality and a filter. (Bettas are aggressive so can't be put in together. Even females and males-- if they want to mate, they can be left together, but after about a week she'll eat his fins if she gets bored or isn't in The Mood.) He's got some elaborate scheme in mind using plastic canvas, the material from which countless projects of far more dubious merit have been conjured. I'm... Not that good at spatial relations, so I leave it up to him.

I took pictures of New Fooshie today, and I also took pictures of Al-- he's recuperating from his illness in the big tank. We mixed up the antibiotic-laced water in the Big Tank because it has to be mixed up ten gallons at a time, and then we put him into a little bowl, but realized the concentration wasn't right. So we simply set the smaller bowl in the big tank, and watched, and in a moment Al realized he could swim up out of the little bowl, and it was a really funny moment. ("Am I dead?" Dave voiced-over, as he swam up out of the bowl to the surface of the water.)

But I got almost absolutely nothing done today. I reviewed a few things, confirmed that my new draft of Ch. 1 is unreadable, read the old one and was depressed, read some of my Unfinished Fanfic Epic and thought wistfully that it was way more interesting and better-written (so sad), and then we went to the grocery store for hours, and then I took a nap that I hadn't thought I'd needed. Yup. I am a raging dynamo of productivity. I gotta do Ch. 8 at work tomorrow and am stuck because I really don't know where to go next until I've overhauled the previous ones and they're not cooperating.

If anyone is at all interested in being My Best Friend In The Whole World I would love to get some intensive beta-editing done via e-mail on this Damned Novel. I mean, I email you the Word copy, and you just rip the thing apart and stick it back together in a new order if you want, tell me to throw out sections, draw lines through the words that are stupid, etc.-- anything you can think of to alleviate the crap. (Should I start off the novel in a different scene? Do I need a bit to show he's a badass after all?) I won't ask you to do the whole novel, just help me out with the opening bits and help me point myself toward a better place. (But I'm warning you, 'the opening bit' is probably 10k words all told.)
I just need a kick in the pants from someone with more distance from the source material. So anyone... I will trade, I will do the same for you for pieces of comparable length, and I promise I'm better at editing other people. if you don't have anything for me to beta, I will... put together the best Easter basket you ever got from all the local Buffalo chocolatiers and mail it to you, or something. Name your price. I am stuck.

I'll do it. I haven't really been following it, so send me what you want me to rip up. I'll read through it with brand-new eyes and tell you what works and what doesn't work for me the reader. Does that sound okay? Since I'm not working right now I have plenty of time. And it'll be almost like working on my own thing. :-)

Lemme know.

I'm so glad you got a couple good offers on it. I'd have liked to have volunteered, but I'm in the middle of a big project myself, with too little time to spend on it.

Still want to read the thing evenually, though.

Maybe by the time you get to read the thing, it won't suck! :)
