can you smell that?
Feb. 14th, 2005 08:07 pmCan you smell what the Dave is cookin'?
I can. Shrimp szechwan.
OK, i did all the chopping, but it still means love.
btw: please do let me know if you read any of the Valentine's Porn, as I'd love to know someone besides me thought it amusing. (C'mon, those pairings got 8 votes! I figured somebody'd want to read 'em.)
And do stay tuned. There may well be a bonus, just for somebody.
Unless the shrimp is that good.

Lothiriel couldn't shake the little thought that she was always being gotten rid of. But now was not the time to dwell on it. ... Sneaky slipping that in there like that, so casual. As if it weren't central to her characterization and would later be explained in better detail. The way you write, I don't know, there are a lot of words, but I can't skip even one of them. I might miss something crucial. Is it possible for a wordy writer to also write really tight prose? I wouldn't have thought it, but you keep on doing it. Creepy that Lothiriel and Eowyn should have lost relatives on the same days, like that. Is that from Tolkien? I wonder if he realized what he was doing. And I don't think any other fanficcer has ever picked up on it before. "Sorry," she said, releasing Faramir's mouth, and turned to kiss Lothiriel's mouth instead ... This was a fantastic, perfect slashy moment. It fits in so well with Eowyn's character, and the lead-up was absolutely logical; I never got that jolt of "huh?" surprise that seems to accompany most spontaneous slash. Faramir's reaction was also classic. :) You also haven't given in to a single sex cliche. "shocking awake the nipple" is fresh, descriptive, and so right that I can't believe I've never read that before.
I'm so fangirling you. Be very afraid. :)

Date: 2005-02-18 01:11 am (UTC)I do try. This subject matter is so dense, though, that there isn't really room for wittering on-- there is just too much to say and horrifyingly enough, there's another hundred thousand words lurking that wants me to write it. I am exceedingly pleased that you feel that way, though. :D
>lost relatives on the same day
Straight outta Tolkien. It doesn't come across in TT just how dire shit was. Everything was going wrong at once. Had the Fellowship strayed but a little the whole timeline would've collapsed and Meduseld would've been a smoking ruin and Minas Tirith probably too.
OK, not quite the same time (Whoops). The timeline informs me:
25 Feb First Battle of the fords of Isen; Theodred son of Theoden slain
26 Feb Death of Boromir
But Theodred died at dusk (cf Unfinished Tales, "The Battles Of The Fords of Isen") and Boromir died in the morning, so it's, um, close? (Dern. I need to edit. Denethor and Theoden died at pretty much the same time, though.)
Tolkien was into this coincidence stuff, though. Boromir and Theodred were born in the same year. (Uh, wait, that's not in the timeline. Then I don't know how I know that. But I know it's true. Oh, appendix A, Kings of the Mark, Eomund dies 3002 and Theodred is described as 24 years old, which makes his dob 2978, same as Boromir's: I'm not crazy).
I have such a painful hankering to write Theodred. Why are there only twenty-four hours in a day and why must I spend so many of them asleep? The poor dead neglected bastard is crying out to me. How can other people not hear him? The poor, poor bastard.
>spontaneous slash
That came to me and you know, I've been present for things like that, stone-cold sober, and it struck me as perfectly believable. Especially in a culture in which men kiss one another all the time. :)
Eowyn was not a central feature of this story, this Epic of mine. Faramir inserted himself and I liked his dynamic with Eomer (http://www.henneth-annun.net/stories/chapter.cfm?STID=3561) but I didn't mean to slash them. Eowyn, however, wants to have the same closeness with Lothiriel. I might tone down the slash in the Epic version. But it was just too fun to resist for Valentine's Day.
>sex cliche
Thanks. *blush* I'm kind of against cliches in general because they make you say things you don't quite mean just for ease of expression. I'm glad the bizarre alternatives I've been wrestling with worked for you.
>fangirling
Yay! What should I be afraid of?
