Dear [Manager in charge of scheduling]
Feb. 13th, 2005 10:54 amI just wanted to let you know that the other place I work gave my hours to a more senior employee who wanted them, so I've been let go from there (though they assure me it was nothing I did wrong). Which means 2 things for [your company]:
1) I'm now 100% available, and
2) I would dearly love to pick up a few more hours.
I figured I'd give you first crack before I start looking for another second job. If you can use more of me, great! If you want to shift me around to different days, let me know. Otherwise, I'll use the current schedule as a guideline to my availability when looking for new jobs, and I'll let you know of any future constraints on my schedule.
Sincerely,
[Me]
*******
So, whatcha think? Is that a reasonable way of stating it for the benefit of [Manager Who Does Scheduling]?
In other news, I've just gone and set up e-payments for all the bills I can afford. How. Very. Depressing. Niagara-Mohawk hungers for my flesh more than Alexander The Betta Fish does. *shudder* (Envisions the electric company leaping out of its tank and devouring me as Alexander wishes to.)
Relevant quote:
Dave (to Alexander the Betta fish, after eating a fish fry on Friday night): I just ate a fish that could have eaten a fish that could have eaten you!
Alexander: *flares at Dave*

Date: 2005-02-13 04:53 pm (UTC)and if it were me, i might reprase that first sentence a little. it might be fine for your purposes, but i have been in corporate world way too long. i don't know that you necessarily need to add in the part after the comma. i think just saying that a senior employee has those hours explains the entire situation sufficiently and doesn't put a seed of doubt into one's mind. and maybe you might want to rephrase it more so it's not like you're giving them this great opportunity to give you more hours (i.e., you're doing them a favor), but make it more like now you can be more accomodating to them.
but your letter is fine as is- i'm just used to constantly phrasing things to be more pleasing to senior management, which may not be necessary for a bar.

Date: 2005-02-13 05:41 pm (UTC)Dear Boss:
My availabilty has changed to the following: [Blah blah whatever you want it to be. I don't know if you have in for specific days of the week off or whatever.] I am now available to work more hours, etc.
The whole thing about "It wasn't my fault they let me go" to me sounds defensive, and there's no reason to make him think of you that way.
If they don't get the hint and give you more hours, go ahead and look for that second job, and then do another letter with your new availability when it changes again.
