The juggernaut hip-hop musical “Hamilton” has set records on Broadway and the fever for the Founding Father has swept up the Hudson River to Albany, where Alexander Hamilton’s connection to the Schuyler Mansion has sparked fresh interest in the historic site.
“We’re getting a call or two every day about Hamilton since the musical opened this summer. Kids are so excited about this show and it’s been a lot of fun that they’ve found us,” said Heidi Hill, historic site manager of the Schuyler Mansion.
In response, although the house is normally closed to visitors in the winter months, she added a Hamilton-themed tour of the Georgian-styled red brick mansion, built in the city’s South End in 1761. Revolutionary War hero Gen. Philip Schuyler, one of New York’s first two senators, lived there with his wife, Catharine Van Rensselaer, a relative of the Dutch patroon, and their seven children, a few of whom died in infancy. Hamilton married Schuyler’s daughter, Elizabeth, in the mansion’s so-called “best” or “blue” parlor in front of family members and a few guests on Dec. 14, 1780.
