Newp. In the United States, hens aren’t vaccinated against salmonella by law, and if not refrigerated, the shells prove a fertile breeding ground (having had salmonella before, I can confirm I never, ever fucking EVER want to have it again). American eggs should be refrigerated, always. European eggs are safe to leave in the cupboard.

I thought the reason was that in the US distributors wash the egg shells, thus removing the protective whatever on them and making them a potential breeding ground.

oh the crosspost didn't actually include my part of the reblog, which was that it varies by state-- in some US states, it's required to wash them, in others it's banned, and so you should do as your egg seller suggests. Once refrigerated, regardless, eggs must always afterward be refrigerated.
