And yet, I'm still in bed.
Bummer.
I'm channeling my sophomore-year roommate's then-spirit from when she was crazy in the way I could grok, before she went crazy the other way. She and I both had really difficult academic years that year, and we would both stress out in that tiny little cinderblock room lit by Christmas lights, and she would put on Bob Marley and chant, in a manic white-girl way, "Everything is gonna be all right, everything is gonna be all right." I think that was one of her away messages. (They were a big deal in college in 1999 too.) She was weirdly preoccupied with music lyrics. She listened to strange bands, not just Dave Matthews like everyone else (except me) but also Jethro Tull and INXS and the Doors and Tracy Bonham and Limp Bizkit, and these are the sounds of 1999 to me. (Along with IM notification sounds.)
She was studying abnormal psych and we analyzed everyone we knew. Especially the boy we were both obsessed with and each of us never forgave the other for dating him.
And she'd study Orgo, and I'd write my kanji over and over and over (and still fail that damn quiz), and I have a vivid memory of reading H.G. Wells' The War Of The Worlds late at night with her asleep on her top bunk and almost all the lights off and my headphones stretched as far as the cord would go, listening to both Limp Bizkit albums, and turning my head and the stretched headphone cord tapped me on the shoulder and I just about leapt out of my skin.
It was a grim and weird little year but we were good roommates, despite what came after.
Everything is gonna be all right. Everything is gonna be all right. It was a somewhat intimidating mantra, coming from her.
