My mom and sister and I lived on food stamps and child support checks for about six years while she was going to college and first entered the working world. They helped more than you can imagine. We probably would have starved without them.
You live in New York, right? Buffalo? You would contact the Department of Social Services in your state. Here's a quick link to where you should start looking:
I called my husband, who works there. Call 858-7973. If that isn't the right number, they'll be able to transfer you. Ask them to send you a food stamp application. When you complete it and send it in, they will send you an appointment date.
If you, as an example, pay $800 a month for rent and make less than $320 per week (for two adults), you'll get $118 per month in food stamps.
You'll have to get his mother to make out a rental statement. Get her to hike up the rent on paper as far as you dare. There really is no consequence to her to do this. It's not like it gets reported to the IRS.
You will also have to produce a tip log in addition to your pay stubs.
If you want to get food stamps NOW, you need to go down to the Rath building, first floor. And wait in line forever. Plan it for a day you aren't working. Take with you a rent receipt (exaggerated if possible), the tip log, the last two pay stubs, gas, electric, and phone bills, as well as your and his social security numbers and birth dates.
Go to HEAP while you're downtown. The deadline on that application is going to run out soon, though I don't remember when.

Food Stamp Outreach (http://www.foodstampshelp.org/getfoodstamps/howtogetfoodstamps.aspx#county)
In the menu box just find Erie county (I'm assuming that's the county you live in?) and it'll give you specific directions to your local office.
