I'm glad the holidays are over. Not because I dislike holidays, but because I am an inveterate whiner, and now that they're over people will hopefully stop asking me how my holidays were. Because I have invariably replied, truthfully, "awful", and only after having replied thus do I realize that they didn't actually want to hear how my holidays were, they were just making conversation, and I've just totally rained on their parade. "Er," I would amend, "yeah, so how were yours?" (Brightly.)

I am absolutely exhausted but just can't sleep. Either the heat's on and it's too dry, the humidifier's making funny noises, Dave's awake and making funny noises, Dave's asleep and not making funny noises, or my bed's too cold, or the sheets are funny, or I'm hungry, or I'm too full, or some bloody thing is always keeping me from catching up on my sleep. So I still haven't caught up from my massive sleep deficit over the holidays.

It's only to be expected, I suppose-- I am used to having no time commitments whatsoever and to spending my time precisely how I want, and I grew accustomed to taking my sleep in smaller doses spaced out throughout the day. So I think my body's still in that mode, only I'm working instead of writing, and so I can't just work when I feel active and sleep when I feel tired. I'm also writing: I intended to begin revision of the Vikings novel by now, but the Other Novel is pulling at me and I'm currently in the midst of two scenes, one a beginning one and one a climax one, one on my computer at home and one on the Newton that I'm working on while I'm stuck in the Club. (I had three customers there last night, in a span of eight hours.)

So anyhow. I have today off, and have tentative plans to see the RotK EE DVD, which may well have more letters in its acronym than my sister's military unit. (I dislike the acronymification of my language, but I'm not going to spell the whole bloody thing out either.) I have decided that I appreciate the movies because they have made me a deeper fan of the books, but I am not particularly a fan of the movies-- yes, i enjoy watching them, but then, they've taken my favorite books (which are even more my favorite books now) and have given them a healthy injection of Army of Darkness, and have done all sorts of wicked things to my poor Éomer. And I used to be an Eowyn fan and now am not. Yadda yadda. And yet, i have to watch this last installment and see whether it changes my mind. At the very least, I have to see them give Éomer a moment on screen where he gets to do something... I don't know, well-acted comes to mind. Human? Reasonable? I dunno.

I expect I'll enjoy it thoroughly but just to be safe I'm only watching it with Corey, who probably won't mind if I heckle a bit. I can't help it. The words just come out. At least I keep my voice down. In movie theatres.

So yeah, Other Novel is being exciting, but it absolutely refuses to be written in the... fourteenth draft. each scene I write, i write knowing full well that it's going to have to be revised, and revised heavily. I am on an entirely new plot, which makes this the third major plot overhaul. This one is so thorough that not a single scene can be reused from the old draft. Which was over two hundred thousand words. This novel is so fucking labor-intensive. But it's far more interesting than the Viking one, which structurally wrote itself in a month, in the first draft, and now needs a single overhaul to change existing scenes to the other point of view-- no major changes, just rewrites.

I couldn't tell you what the difference is, except that I drew out the probable plot for the Vikings novel while waiting for November to start, and I started Other Novel with a paragraph of ideas and then an opening scene (long since abandoned in rewrites, full of plot dead-ends)...
