1 oz. gin
1/2 oz. grenadine
fill glass 3/4 with sour mix
shake
fill with club soda
top with 1/2 oz cherry brandy
garnish with cherry and orange
Singapore Sling, in the elaborately-photographed Tiki Cocktails book Dave's sister gave him for his birthday:
2 oz. gin
1 oz. grenadine
1 tsp superfine sugar
1 tsp vanilla syrup
juice of 1/2 lemon
1 tsp cherry brandy
club soda
(from the photo, apparently you garnish with a cherry, a lime, a cocktail umbrella, and a plastic monkey.)
At the beginning of Fear & Loathing In Las Vegas (the book, at least), they're sitting in a hotel drinking Singapore Slings when the dwarf comes with the telephone to give him the assignment to cover the motorcycle race.
The Singapore Sling was invented at the Raffles Hotel in Singapore in the early 1900s. The "sling" part may derive from the German verb "schlingen", which means "to swallow".
Funniest photo in the Tiki Cocktail book: The "Missionary's Downfall" drink is photographed in a wine glass that has the slogan emblazoned on the side: "Wonderful Tonight" [some stars] "May 20th, 1988". Obviously someone's old prom glass. For a drink invented in the fifties. Why not?
Oh, we have another recipe, from the booklet accompanying the martini kit Dave's sister gave him last year (the year before?).
Singapore Sling, from "Martini 101" (another overelaborate drink manual):
juice of 1/2 lemon
1 tsp powdered sugar
2 oz gin
1 oz cherry brandy
dash bitters
soda water
lemon & orange wheels
maraschino cherry
So. In short, it's a sweet&sour-mix-based drink, diluted a bit with club soda, containing gin and cherry brandy. I get to go forage for ingredients a bit later; Dave's leaving the precise recipe up to me because I'm a "professional".
I suppose so, but I never get to make fun drinks. I should throw in the towel at the airport and find me a job somewheres where people actually order drinks instead of just chicken fingers alla time. I wanna mix drinks!!
