This is one of the worst stories I've heard lately, not for gruesomeness but for sheer shivering "that would be so awful'ness. This blogger's cousin's wife was killed by a drunk driver, and because he worked the opposite shift from her and the police couldn't immediately find him, the story ran in the paper, with her full name and details, before they notified him. So he found out that his wife was dead when one of his church members called to offer condolences.

I hate them doubly because when my dad emailed me the link to the story, the message at the bottom of the email encouraged me to check out “more great articles at tampatrib.com!”

From Que Sera Sera, a normally very funny blog by a writer for McSweeney's.

On that note, I go now to dress for my weekly 15-hour day in which I fail to make any more money than in the normal-length ones. Bleah.

As a person who lived with the Trib as her daily paper for nigh on 20 years, I can say definitively that the people running the thing are total asshats.

A less horrifying miscue they suffered recently was when the Lightning won the Stanley Cup this past year. In a "Dewey Defeats Truman!" moment, the Trib ran the "Lightning Lose Stanley Cup" stories--when, in fact, the Lightning had won the game (and the Cup).

Sigh.

That is really awful.
But I have to say, it's the police who are at fault here. They don't tell reporters the names until they're informed the family. Sometimes we've waited days, starting to suspect that they just don't want to tell us, before they finally give us the names.
So why on earth would the police give out the name before telling her husband??? I just can't imagine them doing that.
Maybe the paper knew who she was from some other thing, like talking to witnesses or maybe the reporter knew her and recognized the car...
In that case, it's totally the paper's fault.
Anyhow, totally evil.
