I am such an incompetent accountant.

Argh. Somebody just shoot me. I am so sick of worrying about money.

Yup yup. Screwed up the math. Checks will bounce. Yay. Checks will bounce, I will pay big fees, it will be sweet. I am world's biggest idiot.

Oh, this just struck me-- I am making less now than I did when I was on unemployment. Rich, isn't it?

edit: mom thinks I deserve what i get for not keeping better tabs on my outstanding checks. Sorry-- my skills have never been with math or accounting, and I failed to take into account the thought that someone would hold onto a check for 340-odd days.

But, yes, any amount of credit I had for being the thriftiest of my sisters is gone out the window, right in time for the holidays. I'll just make a t-shirt that says "FOOL" in big letters across the chest.

340 days? Don't checks become invalid after ~ 4 months?

Nono, we've already been over this with the bank. I guess it depends on the bank, and hers will honor checks up to a year old, unless otherwise instructed. Bogus, but true.

No.
Either 180 or 365 days. Depending on your bank. I recommend you find out which is the case for you; it helps keep the surprises down.

The more i think about it the more I like "fool" on a t-shirt, because people wouldn't know what you meant by it. :D

I have bounced checks (well, the banks pays, just charges me out the wazoo) four or five times this year. Paid probably $100 in fines each time. So if you are a fool, I'm a moron.
I say you've just made a one-time mistake. Me, I'm definitely a moron, though. I don't learn from my accounting mistakes, apparently.

The difference being, my bank doesn't pay. I got overdraft protection so it rolls over to my credit card, but having been broke for ever means my credit card is pretty charged up, which means I have like ... $50 in overdraft protection.

So the bank charges me $25 if I bounce a check, and then whoever's check bounces also charges me a fee, AND it goes on my credit report. "She bounces checks."
I spent an hour on the phone with the bank trying to get them to cover it one way or another-- can I sign up for more overdraft protection, can I increase the limit on my credit card-- and it was all, "Sure, give us three to five business days..."
Which is about as useful as tits on a bull.

So, nothing I can do, and it's possible that the utility company who is slowest with their check (unless they are super-slow indeed and it doesn't get there until after the deposit, which should arrive Tues or Weds, maybe Thurs) will actually report me to a collections agency. They can do that, if a check bounces.

Because my bank won't cover it and I *know* that. Hence, me = moron.
