just me noodling about with my finances here now that I have some reasonable quantity of schedule to base my figures off of:
Local Bar: 12 hours a week @ $4.50/hr = $54/wk
(Hm. It'd take 5 and a half weeks of that to pay one month's rent.)
Airport Bar(s): 23 hours a week @ $6/hr = $138/wk
$552/mo + $216/mo = $768 / mo.
$768 * 12 months = $9, 216 year.
Now that's one hell of a salary.
Before taxes, mind you.
I guess that's why bartenders rely on tips. Let that be a lesson to y'alls. The tips aren't the icing on the cake. The tips *are* the cake. The salary is the little legal dusting of legitimacy.
The downside is that at present, 16 of the airport bar hours are in the bar where you don't really make any tips.
I am so sick of worrying over this. At least Dave got his tax refund from last year, which is rapidly dwindling as he a) buys food and b) keeps his car from getting repo'd.
And now... here comes Christmas!!
Dave is theoretically addessing The Old Landlady Issue, and I'm not particularly interested to ask how that's going. He has got legal representation via His Buddy Who Just Passed The Bar's Law Firm, which is a good start. Beyond that, I'm just scared to ask.
Added:
Upon conversation with Dave's buddy Corey, he reveals that his ex's roommate, who was a bartender at various downtownish locales, made 2/3 of her income in tips (he saw her tax returns one year). Taking that figure and using it as a base, out of curiosity, I have determined that I could make almost as much (if that estimate's anything like realistic) here as a bartender as I did in Westchester County as a technical writer for let's just call them "We're Crazy Paranoid Fucking Bastards And You Hate Us And We Make You Crazy, Inc".
You know, that wouldn't be bad at all.
But I just don't know.
Grim. Or, perhaps not so?
Bleah, money is stupid.

By the way-- I'm totally with you on the entry today about flipping out. Incompetents piss me off. Most of all when all my tips are going to them because they're "training" me.
