dragonlady7I'm going to start off with what has to stand alone as the best IM quote of the evening, courtesy of my friend Abbie, an illustration major who teaches art to middle-schoolers now:
Abbie: I was using the word fantabulous, and it completely stopped conversation.
I think we all know the feeling.
My first solo shift went beautifully, but, well, I was alone in a tiny unused bar in the back of an exclusive club. My sales for the day totaled $10 cash and $10 charge. I also dispensed a ton of free sodas and juices, and fed people free crackers, trail mix, and pretzels.
I raked in $9 in tips, mostly from people who hadn't spent a dime but whose free Cokes I'd refilled attentively and for whom I'd gone in the back and brewed tea from the hot water spout in the kitchen because the tea-and-cappuccino machine was broken. It was nice to get $3 from one guy who I hadn't sold a thing to but to whom I'd been pleasant and attentive.
Unfortunately, I get to work that club two more days this week, instead of any place where I'd actually earn money. But, it's called 'dues', and you gots to pay 'em. I don't really truly mind. Actually it was nice-- I wrote 1800 words on Dave's little Newton (antiquated full-keyboard PDA from Apple that looks like a tiny lunchbox and inspires envy in everyone who sees it), and read a National Geographic article on the Pashtun tribesmen of Afghanistan who are probably sheltering Osama bin Laden.
Still. I need cash, man. I'm sick of worrying about it.
