That stuff in American grocery stores, called Canadian Bacon? It's not.
The real stuff is called "Pea Meal Bacon".
Dave bought some from the butcher down the street yesterday, while on an odyessy. He stopped at no less than five places while grocery shopping.
He special-ordered goose fat for special Christmas cookies.
He bought catfish. ("How can you say no to the cute little fishes??" he asked, bringing the unwrapped catfish fillets into my bedroom to show them to me before he battered and fried them.)
He bought German pear-brandy candies. ("Gotta love Europeans," he said, and fondly recounted how he'd gotten wasted in Dortmund, Germany, during the World Cup finals, just eating cherry-brandy candies.)
He bought Polish sausages. ("Mmmm.")
And he bought pea-meal bacon. ("How could you say no?" he asked, bringing the unwrapped bacon into my bedroom to show them to me before he fried them and put them on the eggs benedict.)
The butcher rolled pork loin in cornmeal, and instead of cutting it on the meat slicer, he cut it with a serrated knife into the individual slices he was selling on special for $6.99/lb.
It was tasty.
Today, I'm going to go shopping shopping shopping, yay! and then I'm going to goof off all afternoon and lie in bed and NOT WORK.
