I turned on my computer, my poor computer, and fired up my email.
Tons of new messages.
All notifications of comments received on my MovableType blog.
All spam, porn spam.
I have over 400 comments. They are still coming in at this moment, as Dave works to take the site offline. (I was going to just go and change all the folder names, so they'd still be there but inaccessible. He's doing something else, won't tell me what, and I've gotten 20 new spam comments while he's been doing it.)
And each spam is from a different IP address. The only weapon I have in MT's old version (the new one only just came out) is that I can ban commenters by IP address. So far, I've banned about 300 IP addresses, and there's no falloff in the rate of comment spam I get. And then I get something like this, obviously all the work of a single automated program, and it's got a different IP for each comment. No, sir, that's not gonna work.
So, that's it.
Defeat.
No more Movable Type.
No more trying to look serious and professional about my blogging.
I will try to make the archives available again someday, just for my satisfaction. But in the meantime, my entire site will be down, to save me from the God-Damned porn spam bots.
I have good Google rankings for a lot of phrases, which is what attracts them. I'm going to embed the Livejournal into the page instead, when I redesign. If I get comment spam on the Livejournal, they have a whole Abuse team dedicated to getting it.
