dragonlady7: self-portrait but it's mostly the DSLR in my hands in the mirror (drachen)

Having recently re-initiated contact with some people I haven't seen since I moved, and having made a bunch of new friends (*hi!*), and having been really pleased to see [livejournal.com profile] nilmandra007's pictures of her house and garden ages ago now, I decided to post pictures of the house where I live now. It's been... My, it's been months now. Coming up on our second full month of occupancy this week. It's a cute little house, I'm quite happy here, and I just wish that I had some decorating skill, at all.
Really.
Organizational skill would help too. I still have piles of things sitting next to empty shelves. Sigh.

It doesn't help that everything I own is secondhand. I have actually purchased one piece of furniture ever. No, I lie. Dave bought it. I have secondhand furniture, handed down. Secondhand lamps, secondhand rugs, secondhand clothes even. So nothing matches anything else.

At least it's comfortable!

So, anyone with decorating sense, feel free to tell me what I ought to do. (It doesn't have to be good decorating sense. Freshman year of college I turned my wardrobe sideways to use as additional desk space because I liked it that way and was sick of all the normal configurations for my room. I'm open to very weird suggestions.)

And yes, I know-- getting a slipcover for the World's Ugliest Couch should be #1 on my list, but Dave thinks that might detract from its Supernatural Comfort Mojo.

^.^

So, here are the photos of my cute little house with no fashion sense just like me.

You asked what you could do with your living room. I suggest you find a fabric with a bold pattern and colors that go with everything. Re-cover the seat in the basket chair, make a whole slew of pillows of different shapes and sizes, a table cloth or runner for a table, cover the lampshade with matching ribbons, and make a large picture or mirror frame for the wall. That well tie all the various elements together, and can sometimes actually look better than if you bought pieces to go together.

And it is a cute little house.

>a cute little house

Thanks! Now I just have to figure out how to operate the vacuum cleaner. :)

That's a darn good idea, for the living room. Shades of blue would please me immensely. And the circular coffee table needs refinishing-- maybe I could just get it a tablecloth instead.

If I were going to splurge on anything, though, it'd be a new rug. Maybe I'll find a place where I can get carpet remnants and try to get something reasonably-colored there...

But yes-- excellent idea. I knew it was a good idea to ask for advice!
People on the Internets is so smart. :)
