stir-crazy
Jun. 30th, 2004 10:10 pmDid some yardwork today-- helped Dave's mom and aunt remove a tree from the backyard. This was quite an undertaking, in the end. I, retardedly, forgot sunscreen (it was cloudy at first) and so, consequently, am rather burned now.
I didn't go to Dave's Shakespeare class with him today. Dave's mom always goes out Wednesday nights with her teacher buddies. I usually go with Dave and get food after his very enjoyable class. But I decided not to go today-- I felt oogy and kind of stir-crazy.
More: Running!!
So I stayed home, took a brief nap, did some writing, and then decided to nap again. However. I'd been lying there about a half an hour when I suddenly decided I needed to go out for a run.
Not a walk, a run.
Mind you, I haven't run since I was last forced to. So...
Astonishingly, once I got to the side street I had chosen to begin my route from, and began jogging, I didn't get tired. I got to the first intersection where I had to wait for the light, and I wasn't tired. I crossed the street, fully intending to walk for half the block to catch my breath, and didn't have to. I just sort of... kept going.
So I ran quite a distance, for me. I just didn't get tired. I slowed to a walk when I had about a third of a mile left, because I wanted to have a chance to cool off a bit. And I really wasn't that tired.
But given that I haven't run in years, it was probably better to be safe than sorry. Yesterday I rode the bike for probably about 2+ miles all told, and that didn't really tire me either.
I guess my problem is that 1) I think I'm in worse shape than I am, and 2) I just don't have the time and attention span to actually tire myself out. Also, I have occasionally overdone things in the past, and it is markedly unpleasant. Better safe than sorry. Maybe I'll get into a habit of doing this regularly, and then I can increase the distance and pace little by little so that I don't do anything overambitious and stupid. But. That would be asking much. I freaking hate running usually, and am never seized by this sort of compulsion.
However. Unmitigatedly good thing: the running shoes I purchased a couple of days ago on huge sale at Dick's, for $50 (on sale from $85), these being the first decent sneakers I have ever owned that weren't second- or thirdhand: are totally awesome. They were so comfortable. No blisters, no soreness, nothing. Good arch support, good heel cups, my ankles love me, my knees love me, and not a whimper from my hips.
Well, we'll see how I feel tomorrow morning.
Though, if I am hurting anywhere, I can blame it on the tree trunk I was hauling around this afternoon. :) I know you're supposed to lift with your knees, not your back, but I just couldn't get a good grip on the thing and had to kind of roll it up my leg... Must've weighed no more than 50 or 60 pounds, but I really couldn't get a good grip on it.
