concerts, part 2
May. 22nd, 2004 12:17 amTonight we saw Medeski, Martin & Wood playing at SUNY Purchase.
Why the flurry of concert-going activity?
About a month ago I was at the post office and noticed a poster for MMW. I noted the date and the location and suggested it to Dave as a possible activity. The following weekend we went down into the City and noted a poster for the Magnetic Fields. We looked them up and sure enough, they were playing yesterday and today. Well, we thought. Two concerts in two nights. That'd be fun.
Then we determined that we were moving this weekend. Ah yes. Great idea.
Well, anyway, it was fun. MMW were interesting. Improv jazz is really, truly not my thing, but they're really good when they stop screwing around. Unfortunately the awesome bassist (Wood) was under-amplified, while the screechy keyboardist (Medeski) was over-amplified. It was kind of annoying.
Also annoying were the three kids in front of us who kept lighting up their joints and smoking them.
Mildly amusing were the masses of stoners who were doing interpretive dance in the aisles. Most of them were laughable. A few were actually graceful, but a very few.
I felt very much an outsider, and also very, very much cooler than anyone there. They were total dorks, man.
