To Whom It May Concern:

I've been looking for a contact address for alumni relations and haven't found one, so I hope whoever checks this email account would be kind enough to forward this to whoever it is who should really receive it.

I just wanted to say that it's really the little things that show the greatest significance in human relationships. If this is how your organization really feels about its alumni, I would greatly appreciate it if you would cease and desist from sending me begging letters and emails, and stop phoning me up to ask me for money. If you care so deeply for me that you can ask me for money every time I turn around, then why are you canceling the one thing UR ever gave me that I'm actually using? (Since the job market's so great, my degree is nicely irrelevant. Honestly, the email address is the only thing I got from this place that has been of concrete value thusfar.)

Funny. I'd sort of assumed that UR would stop treating me like dirt once I'd graduated. I kind of took it for granted that they'd be nice to me once I was no longer legally obligated to give them money, if they still wanted money from me. Apparently, I was wrong.

I know, it's just a little thing. It's not like I particularly need it. It was just nice to have, and the one thing in my daily life I could look at and say, "well at least that was nice of them," as I fruitlessly applied for jobs. But, you know, in the end, it's the little things that make the difference.

So, please, stop asking me for money.
And if you see Dean Green, please tell him "fuck you" from me. He needs to hear it.

Sincerely,

Bridget Kelly

Subject: CIF Accounts for Alumni

Hello CIF user account holders,

In the past, CIF has had some ability to allow UR alumni to keep their CIF
web/mail/shell accounts. This is no longer the case. Dean Green and ResNet
have decided that offering accounts was a network security and accountability
problem for the university. I assure you that CIF is doing everything we can
to get this decision overturned. In the meantime, any of you who are already
alumni, your accounts will be **deleted on April 30th**. (If you are still
employed by UR then you are exempt, but be sure to tell us!). CIF is working
on setting up an alternative off-campus service for those who are affected.

I am sorry that we cannot continue the alumni service,

Greg Briggs
System Admin & Technology Director
Computer Interest Floor

Dean Green is a MOTHERFUCKER. This is the same asshole who, my sophomore year, decided that the University would reinstate freshman housing, and indeed would house all freshmen on the Res Quad, which was traditionally where sophomores and juniors lived. They held a kinda town meeting, and tons of students showed up to say, "DON'T DO IT! It's a BAD IDEA!" These students had many well-thought-out reasons, indeed a whole variety of them. And a vote was held. The overwhelming, overwhelming majority of students AND staff voted against Green's freshman housing plan.

Which he then went ahead and implemented.

I moved off-campus and said, well, fuck you, UR, if that's how it's going to be. (I understand, it's a fine institution, and shouldn't be blamed for the actions of one fuckwit. But, I'm a vengeful and illogical bitch at times.)

I figured, at least now I'm an alum, Green won't fuck with me.

Well...
Fuck you! Just, fuck you! It's the one fucking thing I still had of UR that was actually bloody useful. I use that account for a lot of things, still, and the webspace was a convenient, permanent home for Blue.

But if you're going to play like that...

It's the little things, y'know?

Edit: I actually sent the email above. We'll see what happens.

Have you been following the events on floor?

There are real reasons for him making this decision. Not to say that I agree with them -- I'm already crying over losing my account, and the fact that the floor is going to wait until the fall to even attempt at appealing -- just that this isn't something he pulled out of his ass.
This has been an oft-recurring issue, and until now CIF has had a "but we don't have fuckwits who will screw up your network here" excuse that has prevaled. (prevailed? hmm...) Since that excuse no longer holds water, Dean Green and ResNet saw their opportunity and pounced.
And if they do go through with this and hose us out of our accounts, well, there's always the potato gun.

No, I haven't followed any of the events.
I just hate Dean Green with a personal, abiding passion.

I wasn't going to whine at the person in question at all. I don't know any of the CIF staff and in fact I think I only know like one current CIFfer.

Potato gun-- this is appealing. Most definitely.
I just figured it was a good trigger for me to unload a small and venomous piece of my mind in the direction of Alumni Relations. I don't care if they have reasons. I don't really care. If they gave a concrete shit about alumni, they'd fix those reasons. As it is, they don't. probably because the alumni in question are young and poor. But anyway, I thought being bitter about it couldn't hurt. Freaking... Dammit! I used my cif account whenever I signed up for anything non-urgent and long-term-- the stuff I don't use every day, but still want to know about. So... precisely the stuff that's important and yet impossible to track down every instance of.

Sigh.

Ah well. Potato gun. Yes. This is a consoling thought.

A kid on floor (my next-door neighbour, actually), was running a DC++ server through CIF. ResNet got wind of it, and flipped their shit, neatly ignoring the "We do not claim responsibility for what we house on our servers, provided it's not of a pornographic nature or a business" clause.

CIF was almost disbanded.

I'm pretty pissed myself. Even though I don't use it much, I was looking forward to having my email forevermore.

Fuckers.
