Nanowrimo both affirms and depresses me.
Affirms, because it confirms to me that I am indeed really, really good at writing. I have no problem in cranking out 20,000 words in three days. And feedback assures me that, yes, they are actually *good* words, or should I say, words well-spelled and in a good order; the words are just words. I'm good at this. I'm *very* good at this.

Depresses, because what I do for a living has nothing to do with it.
My help systems (what I'm writing just now) are mediocre and uninspired. My websites are poorly-organized and survive by brute force. And I'm really not much of a graphic designer.

I was told again today that I should be a columnist. My favorite professor (Higs! for those who know her) told me the same thing when I was a junior or senior. It would suit me ideally.
However.
I have no idea how to go about it.

Sigh.

But at least I have the affirming aspects of nano to build off of. I may never be much good at anything else, including building the website that's supposed to showcase my skills (bummer.) but at least I can freaking well WRITE.

to become a columnist...I recommend you start by applying at newspapers. Weeklies might be more willing to give you a chance; every daily paper employs at least two and usually three or more opinion writers.
The jobs really are out there...
