I saw a woman this morning walking her dog. She paused at the intersection before crossing, and I realized she wasn't just walking, she was dancing. And singing. She boogied for a second while she made sure the oncoming traffic was stopping at the light, and then she shimmied her way across the road.
As she passed I recognized the distinctive white wires of a pair of headphones belonging to an iPod.
Apple Inc. was brilliant to make even the headphones of the iPod distinctive. You seldom see iPods, when you're out and about, but you see the head phones, nestled in the ears of the hip, trendy, chic, and... average.
I love mine but I'm thinking of taking some of the music off of it so I can use it for a portable off-site backup. The wildfires in San Diego (threatening the home of Dave's sister and her husband) have got me thinking of disasters with more than fleeting paranoia. My website's hosted on my ISP but all my work is just sitting on my home computer, and the backup server is... in the living room.
Food for thought-- I wonder how many small business owners, especially freelancers, have any disaster recovery plans?
There's a discussion on WebmasterWorld recently among small business owners there about what would happen if they fell under a bus and died. Would their dependents be able to manage their businesses? Certainly not as lucratively as they themselves could. So... That discussion is here and is very interesting. (Subscription may be required.) A related, earlier topic on insurance is here and interesting as well.
I've also been writing up a few ideas about acquiring customers, marketing myself, and conducting public relations, based on a thread at High Rankings on that very topic. I've been thinking about starting up a newsletter or something. I was emailing back and forth with a webmasterworld member who suggested a forum of some kind, but I'm thinking a newsletter would be much more my speed. I don't have the 24/7 attention span required by a forum, yet anyway. I could manage a weekly or biweekly newsletter.
So, I'm going to pitch the idea in my next post. Drop me a line (bridget at kelly dot name-- I will be getting a comment system in place soon!) and let me know if you have any ideas on the topic. (Makeshift privacy policy: I won't spam you or give away or sell your email address or anything. I hate spam as much as anyone else.) So far I have a couple of articles in mind and a tentative theme for the whole thing, but I'm still cooking it.
