I followed this tutorial to make a boxy zippered bag, because I've followed this exact tutorial before and it was easy enough, and yet somehow I managed to right off the bat sew the first seam inside-out, and get completely lost, and I thought I'd never actually manage to finish it, but.
I came upstairs before sewing the second seam and made Dude look at it with me to ascertain whether it would be right-side out or not. Because I'm not fantastic at 3-D stuff. Or, well, I am, but only sideways and upside-down. I really believe that if only all of my neurons were oriented slightly differently, I'd be a genius, but as it is, nobody can understand me well enough to teach me, so I'm approximately the biggest idiot to ever have lived.

I embroidered a unicorn head on one side of it, and when it got fucked up I sewed a rhinestone on for the eye and it's fine now, and it's made out of dark-red corduroy salvaged from a suit skirt left behind by the previous owner of this house, who has been dead for about a decade. The interfacing is salvaged from a bedskirt my sister gave me to take apart, and the lining is scrap fabric I'd practiced making buttonholes on. The zipper is salvaged from a bag that a mattress pad came in.
This isn't because I hate buying things, it's because I have too much shit in this house and I resolved a couple of years ago not to buy anything if I have something that will suit.

The bag is for my older niece, who is either 7 or 8 and is getting makeup for Christmas, since she wants it.
There's a matching brush roll for makeup brushes, since another sister bought those. The brush roll is just a copy I made by looking at one I have, with the same dark red curduroy on the outside, the skirt lining on the inside, and then the pockets to hold the brushes are a scrap of iridescent purple fabric from a pair of trousers I wore in college twice and then got too fat for. (Lest anyone scold me for not donating them-- and I do try to donate clothes that are in good condition-- they got screwed up in the wash somehow, and they're also deeply, deeply unfashionable and I don't think they were ever in fashion?)
The only purchased thing for this project was the gold bias binding tape that goes around the edge of the brush roll, because I didn't know how else to finish it. What's funny is that I'd bought the bias binding without a clear plan, I'd just thought somehow I'd probably need it.
Anyway.
I just need to figure out how to add a fastener to the brush roll.

And i've got the gifts almost all packaged up. I just need to handsew-down a few loose edges here and there, and then it can all go into a box.

And this morning the garage came and got my car jumped, drove it down, replaced the battery, and then Dude walked down and paid them $172 to get it back, so it works now and it's all OK. Sigh.
I'll live. I'll survive. I can still ship it by Priority Mail and get it there. Everything's fine.

Somehow this was like eight hours of work, but I got it done.
