Bridget,

My repairman Keith finally got back to me on the condition of 119 EH. He said he spent 5-6 hours bagging and removing garbage that was left in the kitchen, basement, and attic. He also said the bathroom and kitchen were quite dirty. I deducted $120 from your security deposit. I mailed a check for $900 to your Melrose, NY address.

Um... I find this really interesting, as I just spoke to the new tenants of the house and they have rather a different story to tell.
Keith came to the house 2 weeks ago for twenty minutes at the maximum, and poked around, mentioned some repairs that had to be done, and expressed displeasure that the house wasn't as clean as it could be.
David Ruskin, the current leaseholder, is an old friend of mine, and assures me that if there was any cleaning done, he and his co-tenants did it themselves. (I might mention here that I cleaned the bathrooms myself just before I left on May 29th, 2002, and can assure you, they were far far cleaner than they were when I moved in, in 2000. I cleaned them then, too.)
So I have no idea why you're charging me $120, and I think that you'd better have another discussion with your property manager, because as of 2:30 a.m. on June the 17th, 2002, he has spent exactly 0 time cleaning 119 E. Henrietta, I am told by two different people who live there currently and have not spent any significant time away from the house in the last three weeks since moving in. I don't see how that justifies such a significant portion of my security deposit being withheld. Perhaps the situation merits another review before such action is taken.

Sincerely,

Bridget Kelly

Ooooh, what a good comeback! Nicely researched, too. What was his response?
