I thought I was over being scared of sleeping alone in the woods but now that it’s really autumn it’s super creepy out here in a way that summer wasn’t. No insects, for one; it’s nice not to worry about things crawling on me quite as much, but it means there’s no crickets and so on to be white noise and also reassure me that nothing’s nearby.
Also, I sort of mentioned this in the Instagram crosspost, but– so a lot of people hunt deer on this property, and there was a guy here last weekend, and that’s cool, he got one bow hunting, good for him. But at some point between Saturday and Monday, apropos of nothing we knew about, a structure appeared in the woods. And it’s like. It’s across the creek from where the pigs are pastured, and within eyeshot of the yurt.
It’s a bunch of rough-hewn saplings formed into a crude conical shape, with a ragged tarp kind of approximately tied to them. It doesn’t look like it’d be all that useful as a shelter, but it must be, like, a blind for a hunter to use? And it has good sightlines along the creek bed, probably, and surely deer come down that way.
But it’s like. Super creepy looking, and nobody mentioned it to my sister and it appeared suddenly, and she rather thought it must have showed up after the hunter she knew about had left (he has a trailer he stays in, far back on the property; I’ve met him, I’m not creeped out by him particularly). So who built it and why?
And why is it… like, right near the yurt?
I stayed indoors the last two nights because I’m a wimp, but there are houseguests and anyway I like staying in the yurt just fine. I just. I get so creeped out, sometimes. And I’m a little creeped out tonight.
I was super good, though, I didn’t read any Halloween creepypastas. My brain’s coming up with them on its own, but at least I didn’t give it any fresh material this year.
I just wish it wasn’t so damn windy tonight, that never helps.
