I forgot to mention this before. This morning I was sitting at my desk and my phone rang. Nobody calls me, so I looked at it idly, prepared to dismiss it, and noticed that the phone number was really really long. Like, it started with +47. So I woke up the display to look properly, and it was one of my cousins in Norway calling me. !!! I had a heart attack, and went cold all over, trying to imagine what series of events would merit a transatlantic cell phone call– surely he would call his mother who would call her brother (my father) and the news would trickle to me– it would have to be something so horrifying– possibly his mother?? but why me?? such a big family, we don’t talk directly for much–
I answered the call, and it was staticky, and I couldn’t hear anything. I was sort of panicky, and tried and tried to make myself heard, but it was only static.
Eventually I heard my cousin’s voice, sort of distantly, singing, and it came to me, dawning in a sudden light, what was going on.
He has a very young son. And a smartphone with a shiny screen. And surely still has my number in his contacts log from when I was there last year and temporarily had an international calling plan. And it would be evening there, which in my experience is prime time for small fingers to go exploring and be somewhat unmanageable and best left to whatever disastrous devices they come up with. (His son is very young, but I think I recall Farmbaby putting her mother’s phone into Do Not Disturb mode at about six or seven months, kind of disastrously.)
I hung up the phone, because I didn’t need to spend any longer figuring it out. I sent him an email instead so his bill doesn’t astonish him when it arrives.
