I would say #13 for the whole Home Out in the Wind series, but you’ve actually covered that in the notes rather nicely – however, on the subject of music, I would LOVE to know what the songs Poe sang sound like. Does “For the Republic” exist, in any form? And I have a melody in my head for “For she deceived me, and I am undone,” and it would tickle me to know whether or not I was close.
Ohhh gosh, you know, I was thinking didn’t i write a whole post about that and then I remembered: no. I wrote all of that in DVD-style commentary on the first draft of the story when I sent it to betas. I annotated that sucker all up with post-its and honestly in the end I was more pleased with the gdocs-highlight-comment-commentary than I was with the damn fic.
I should figure out a way to publish that, because there was so much material in it. That was back when I was afire with possibility for this project, and I just couldn’t stop having ideas, and I was so nervous about betas that I just– it’s so heavily-annotated, and I don’t even know where that version got to, but it was really entertaining to me.
And I had come up with inspirations for all of the songs.
I’d write out what it was about those songs but I’m so sure I said it well in the commentary– I should go look it up.
Hah. Last opened on February 27th. Last edit Feb 19th. Yowza I’ve been working on this a while.
Contains such gems as “UNRELIABLE NARRATOR POE YOU ARE 32 THAT IS NOT OLD” and “it is hilarious when BB-8 cusses, I am sorry, this is not negotiable”
Man I was super full of myself when I wrote these. I am sort of retroactively sorry, to my betas, who mostly seem not to have minded. I think that’s why I stopped having things beta’d, though– the sheer euphoric flush of creation can’t really overpower my own constant overwhelming sense of how goddamn embarrassing I actually am for very long. ENNYHOO. Moving on.
Here we go. For The Republic. “I don’t have a clear notion of this song in my head but think of a combo of God Bless America for sheer triteness, plus The Battle Hymn of the Republic for having some kind of actual emotion behind it, and also overwroughtness.”
And for “She Deceived Me”– It doesn’t work at all melody or genre-wise, but I keep getting this song stuck in my head when I think about this. Not the tune exactly, or the structure at all, but definitely the bittersweet wistfulness. The lyrics are nonsense anyway; it wouldn’t scan, but the general structure of the melody and the tone of it.
So– whatever tune you came up with, that’s what I was thinking of but I didn’t have a proper replacement tune in my head or anything.
Bonus: the lyrics about rocking the cradle with another man’s baby in it, ie the verse he didn’t sing, is from a song I don’t properly remember, and I tried to find it and I’m almost certain it’s Come Along Lil Dogies, because when I was four I was obsessed with cowboys so I know that song was somewhere in my worldview even if I didn’t have it memorized like I do Tumbling Tumbleweeds or Farewell Old Paint. (I had a Roy Rogers and Dale Evans tape when I was too small to push the tape deck buttons with my fingers. I remember using the pointer and middle fingers of both hands and using my thumbs hooked under the deck for leverage to get the play button down. I also remember needing to use both hands to dial the 9 in my best friend’s telephone number. Analog childhood.)
