“What do you have,” he said, realizing that she had brought him a stick. But it wasn’t a– He fumbled for a tennis ball, and she saw it and leapt in delight, then dropped the neon-bright thing in her mouth. He tossed the ball, not far at all, and picked up the thing she’d dropped. It was an arrow. Like– an archery arrow. It had a blunt head, plastic, brightly-colored, but it wasn’t a toy. That was real fletching. It had come from a real bow. “What the fuck,” he said.
