ha sorry for the bombardment of niagara falls posts yesterday. I was there with my dude and my sister and her three munchkins, and I knew videos would be too big to text, but if I crossposted them to Facebook, Mom could see them. And indeed, Mom and Farm Baby have been watching the Maid of the Mist one on repeat.

I got good and soaked on the Maid of the Mist; my sister laughed in astonishment at one point that the water was fresh! They live right near the ocean, so they’re used to salt water in situations like that. I had the absent-minded thought just now that I should wash the Niagara River water out of my hair, but then I thought for point three seconds longer and remembered that the municipal water around here is out of the same place– I think Buffalo itself pulls from Lake Erie, but the Town of Tonawanda might take from the river, I’m not sure. Either way– it’s the same difference, just mine has had more of the fish pee filtered out.

I’m about to put chapter 5 up, I’m just trying to find a title, and I just realized in my last-second formatting proofread that there’s a ton of my terrible Google Translate-aided half-remembered high school Spanish in this chapter, and i had sincerely meant to have someone look that over, but there’s just no time now, so– apologies in advance, and I’ll fix it someday when I can breathe. Feel free to correct me, but don’t feel obligated. It’s not plot-significant; it’s just that Rey has learned some chunks of holonovela by rote from a data chip she had on Jakku.

My whole self hurts– walking around the Falls is tiring enough, but then you add in suddenly having to be worried about three people under three feet tall who all, separately and in concert, have tendencies to wildly deviate from the expected course. They’re mostly well-behaved kids, and the oldest is 8, which means he can be somewhat reasoned with at times, and mostly trusted not to hurl himself off anything too wildly inappropriate, but that’s still young enough to decide randomly to embark upon a vendetta against his brother, or push his tiny sister off a wall for kicks. (Mostly not! Mostly he’s very sweet to his sister. But if she gets competitive, he’s not old enough to throttle down the killer instinct.)

There were a couple of times when it was absolutely critically useful that we had as many adults as children, because one of them had done something utterly insane and another one had had a meltdown in response and the third one still needed to be minded. I have no idea how my sister routinely manages to take them on outings completely solo. And that’s the other thing– everything went totally smoothly! No one was really hurt or sick or upset! Everything went well! But I am exhausted. I am so glad I never caved to the propaganda and made my own babies. Because they are phenomenally entertaining but Christ, it really takes a village to do fucking anything.
