The woman who starred in my earlier post “loud” https://www.tumblr.com/blog/view/bomberqueen17/688786975138938880 works with us on chicken day so she told the whole story.
The evangelists had showed up to preach a bunch of homophobic hate speech with a fucking loudspeaker. And she was like, there’s no way that’s allowed. And the cops came and were like well, it’s their free speech. And she was like so you’re telling me there is no effective limit on how loud they can be? And they were like well I mean– and she was like So then what you are telling me is, there are no limits on how loud a person can be, since this is a public space? And they sort of hemmed and hawed and she got this glazed grin and was like Buckle the fuck up, we’re about to find out how loud I can be and the cops were like uhh well that’s– no that’s not what we really– and she was like that’s what you said, bitches, so hold onto your butts and sure enough
she shouted down the fucking loudspeaker
She sure fuckin’ did
And every customer who came to her booth in between bouts of this, she said “Call the non-emergency line and complain to the cops about the hate speech because I called them and they said fuck you but if that’s all they get all day, is a hundred people calling them about this, bet they’ll change their tune”
and sure enough this week the cops were like “if those people show up again we’ll come and deal with them”
They did not. And it was me and BIL working the market, so if they had I’m not sure how loud I could be but I did study opera briefly so I bet I could muster something. But it didn’t come up.
Instead some weirdly identically-groomed hippies from a local cult showed up and gently, quietly proselytized at BIL, who asked them some extremely pointed questions they had no notion of how to answer, but that at least didn’t upset customers so we had no troubles.
And many, many people stopped by the booth to thank BIL for his employee being the hero of the market, which he duly passed along to her on chicken day, which I think helped her a lot as she was having a hard day otherwise. (Your picture was not posted)

Date: 2022-07-14 11:54 am (UTC)A local cult here in Philly that hates basically everybody often sets up outside train stations with a loudspeaker and it's a lot. For awhile they were setting up outside a shopping center. No legal recourse since they were on public property and *I guess* within legal limits of how loud you can be during the day. So the shopping center hired a DJ for awhile to drown them out.
