Video featuring the fuzzy photocopy with someone else’s penciled-in notes on it that I was given by the director of the early music group I sang in in college. I have fond memories of coaxing her into singing alto with me at the end-of-year party she threw for us at her house. I am not singing this in the key it’s written in (although I probably could have, I’ve just gotten in the habit of doing the lowest key I can do) and the bass part is of course up an octave, but everything else is where it should be.

Having to learn the other parts for this made me realize that I’m a little out of practice at reading non-shape-note music; I’ve gotten used to relying on the shapes to recognize intervals instead of looking closely at which line a note is on. Maybe I should take a break from shape note tunes and do some more of these; I have a whole binder full of songs we performed, although probably a lot of them are too long for tiktok. If anyone has suggestions for songs I could sing (sheet music available free online, not too long, not too demanding vocal-range-wise) I’d love to hear them. (Your picture was not posted)
