afford that kind of catharsis, just panicking silently i guess

I am so sorry, that sounds really stressful. How long do tests there usually take? (We get ours in about 18 hours at our local place so if it’s that fast wearing a mask at home may not be the worst idea)

It is absolutely worth a try; we did that same thing when my husband’s coworker got a positive, and were really glad we were when he did catch it. Neither I nor our toddler caught it, and we did test two weeks later just to be sure!

Per my family’s experience: wear a mask and sleep in the guest room until you have your resaults. You may keep your dude from catching it. Physically staying away from each other is best practice. (Chita may be able to carry it from one person to another on her fur.) Fingers crossed you don’t have it.

results take 3-4 days here.

I’m not getting a test until I hear back about her results; if for no other reason than that if I was exposed, I won’t have any antibodies for several days, so there’s literally no point in my getting tested yet.

So if I decide to isolate, that’s 3-4 days to hear back on my coworker, and then if hers is positive I will go test, and that’s 3-4 more days to hear back.

here’s the other complication: the guest bedroom is Dude’s office. if I sleep there, he can’t use his desk. Possibly I could air it out between, but– other option is I kick him out of our bedroom. But our living room is so small, I would probably have to isolate myself entirely in the bedroom, as the living room and kitchen are contiguous. So I’m looking at a minimum of seven days of staying entirely in one room in our house. (A room where the only furniture is a bed, mind you.)

The other possibility is that he goes and moves in with his mother until I hear back. That would be easiest. She lives a quarter of a mile away and has high speed Internet and a guest room. Maybe I’ll suggest that. I don’t know. It’s not that they don’t get along, but that would possibly drive them both crazy– but, it would be feasible.

And of course, I don’t get paid sick leave, and there’s no paid leave for self-quarantining either. Probably I would continue going to work at least until I hear back from coworker, because 1) that’s the only way I’ll hear back from coworker, and 2) if she’s not coming in there is no one who can do the work! And on a normal day, I do not have any close contact with coworkers, it was expressly because I asked her how a thing worked that she was near me at all.

Sure there are objectively correct things to do, but in the absence of literally any support mechanisms, they’re almost impossible to do. What it comes down to is I’ll have to ask Dude what he thinks. (Your picture was not posted)
