you are not better than fat people!

even REALLY fat people!

even fat people who don’t put a lot of time into their appearance!

even fat people who wear clothes you think are unflattering!

your appearance literally does not make you better than a fat person. you are not more fun to hang out with because you’re not fat. you are not funnier, smarter, or more interesting by virtue of not being fat. you aren’t harder working, you don’t have more self-control, you don’t have your life more together.

the only difference between you and fat people is that they have to put up with a lot of harassment, discrimination, exclusion, and other bullshit that you don’t even think about.

try not to add to it.

I scrolled past this and then like, way later I had to scroll back and find it because I’d sort of been thinking in the back of my mind and I had never really considered this before, but–

If you’re skinny I don’t trust you! I hadn’t ever really articulated it even to myself, but it’s true. I don’t trust you if your thighs don’t touch, if you can wear trendy styles with spaghetti straps, if you meet that hard-to-define but you know it if you see it criteria of waist-hip ratio that I can only sometimes meet from some angles in some outfits and lately not at all but really I never had that, that indefinable scale of personhood, I was never built like that– if you can walk into a store and walk out with something that goes onto your body even if it’s not quite the right shape. If you don’t have to pay extra for the plus size option. If you have options. If you get to make choices based on style instead of just ‘well it comes in my size so here’s all my money i guess’. It’s no one thing but it’s a constellation and everyone knows it when they see it but some of us don’t have to pay attention to it.

Many of the people I love best in the world are skinny people but I still don’t trust them. Not about this.

Agreed. And to some extent, if someone's traditionally beautiful, too. Because then I know that they have had a completely different life than mine and their experiences will make it very difficult for them to even understand what I'm talking about.
