Oh here I come as a joyless pedant again but! it turns out! I know this from the New York State hunter safety class! Here is a Fact about Deer:
All of the language surrounding what kind of deer it is allowable to take in NYS is gender-neutral because despite the fact that the DEC wants to restrict the take of possibly-pregnant females as well as too-young juveniles, the actual restriction in place is that with the default permit you can shoot “a deer with antlers” because! It turns out!
Deer gender is not a binary! There are antlered does, and mature bucks without! And so the DEC wants to see the genitals of the deer you take, but cannot reasonably expect you to be able to tell from shooting distance that the deer you’re aiming at is an antlered doe, and so if you do shoot an antlered doe, you may do so without penalty on a default permit (as opposed to the doe permits you can get via a lottery or by owning and maintaining a specific amount of land).
SO the blue deer on your shirt COULD WELL BE a doe with antlers. *the more you know*
Gender is not a binary, pretty much anywhere in nature!
