So this is extra funny, because my best friend is somewhat struggling with motherhood– her husband is less helpful than she’d thought, her life does not have the meaning she’d thought, she has less help than she’d anticipated, and most importantly, her daughter is going through a horrible adjustment to kindergarten and has spent months terrorizing the whole household with her refusal to sleep or potty-train or anything, it’s all been a disaster. But, said daughter was drawing a picture, and drew a picture of (arguably) a woman, and labeled it, and she’s five so she can’t spell super great, “Bast Mommy”, meaning that her mommy, with whom she fights constantly, is the best.
But my friend took it as a sign, and began to research Bast– or Bastet– and has bought herself a little figurine and devoted herself in her scant free time to some serious contemplation of the deity. And actually, it’s kind of helped a bit. So.
One tiny Bast factoid: there is lore wherein she disguises herself as a common woman to move among humans, and similarly to the stories of other deities in disguise testing their subjects, it was considered dangerous to mistreat a woman because you never knew if she were perhaps the goddess in disguise.
So, think of that, if you will, and perhaps feel comforted by it. I also happen to love all the cat affiliations, but.
