Yeah, it's one thing to do it with a major fandom like Star Wars or whatever, but The Goblin Emperor is fantastic and also still a not particularly well-known book -- though its fans are very delightful about it.
It's definitely possible to write as an original novel, but it needs more build-up and lead-time, which makes it less fun to write. Unfortunately.
