Just a progress report on my hexagons-- I need to find some orange fabric!


51, by my admittedly distracted count, completed so far!


I should stitch some together to see if my terrible habits of cutting the corners awfully close is a fatal error when the thing is assembled, before I make too many more mistakes. But, for now, I still have a stack of precut bits and another hundred templates or so, and I want to get a good assemblage completed before I decide on any arrangements.

Tomorrow I need to comb through my fabric hoards to find true purple, and true orange-- I have a goldenrod, and I have a burgundy, but that's not enough.

I also may try attaching some stretch fabric to a solid backing because I have a lot more stretch fabric scraps that are Not Suitable for quilting with.
I did one of the hexagons with a scrap of stretchy fabric and discovered that it is Extremely Tricky and not a great idea.

I might just... spray adhesive the fabric to another layer of fabric, because it doesn't matter. Or like... Fabri-tac, or whatever. Tomorrow will be a time to experiment.

No, stretchy fabric is unlikely to be great for backing, right, cause it's likely to crumple the hexies out of shape.
I wish I had fabric hoards here. I do back home, or I have access to my grandfather's, but here I'd have to start cutting up old clothes which I am reluctant to do.

All projects need more orange. It's a sound philosophy.
(maybe I just really, really love warm colors and warm lighting but ORANGE IS SADLY UNDERVALUED imho)

So, I'm one of four siblings, and one of the ways we got to have things of our own as a kid is that they were color-coded. At first our mom kind of assigned us colors, but as adults, we've settled into new favorite colors. (As a tot I was red or pink, but as an adult I don't tend to pick things in those colors.)
Orange was assigned to my middle-little sister, and she has retained her fondness for it to this day. So in general, if I find things that are orange, I wind up giving them to her.

Coincidentally or not, she also loves Halloween to an excessive degree, so she winds up with a lot of Halloween-themed items...

Anyway, I always think of her. #1 was purple, #2 (me) was red, #3 orange, and #4 green, and I still tend to buy gifts along those colors-- like if I'm getting everyone earrings, those are the colors I choose.

It's more that you can't make the hexies themselves out of anything with stretch, because they'll wind up distorted, and will be much too small when you remove the paper template.
I actually have been pondering using old t-shirts as quilt batting, because you wouldn't pull them taut to do it-- just shove them in there and stitch them in place and then the fact that they're capable of stretching won't matter. Batting would deform under stress too, the point of the quilting is that it's tacked to layers that won't stretch.
But that's the challenge of t-shirt quilts-- almost every tutorial to make them involves stabilizing the knit material of the shirts by using adhesives or iron-on or tacking stitches to secure it to a woven backing that won't stretch.

I am trying to do this as much as possible with old clothes cut up but that's because I am somewhere that I have a huge hoard of that sort of thing, so. This is expressly a project one should do out of a hoard of scraps, and not something one ought to buy new fabric just to cut up like this, I feel.

You are very, VERY nearly the teenage mutant ninja turtles. That's awesome XDDD (I Support Raphael, an excellent turtle, always made more sense than Michelangelo or Leonardo or maybe just got more character focus. That is worthwhile.)

Yeah I can't stomach wearing pink really either. Too many smol-me appalled memories of the barbie aisle, I think. Orange is an excellent color: it's loud, it's relatively rare as clothing or as a favorite color so I'm not deluged in orange things, and it's so off-the-wall that it doesn't have terribly strong masculine or feminine associations, aside from construction crews etc. As a pedestrian in a rainy city, I'm all for visibility. Someday I'll find the reflective rickrack that I am convinced MUST exist, somewhere.

Oh gosh, I barely remember the ninja turtles. They were super popular when I was the right age for them, but-- yeah-- I remember that their colors were how you told them apart. I hadn't thought about that in relation to us. I mean, we were different sizes, mostly, but the way I knew which binder and which Popple were mine...

I just... am tired of pink. I grew out of it, y'know?

I just bought reflective seam piping, though now that I have it I don't have a project for it. (I'd meant to make a waterproof cover for my backpack but then I realized I could buy one inexpensively, so.)
I've seen reflective tape and ribbon but never rick-rack. That's an underserved market, that is. I bet you could get lenticular paint and make your own reflective rickrack... or just applique the reflective piping in a rick-rack shape... Possibly not worth the hassle, but chic as hell.
