I got a comment on one of my several (ha) epic (ha) fics, the other day, berating me for using a particular nasty word. By using the phrase [word]phobic.
I explained my word choice, explained the concept of a narrator/viewpoint character, and how the narrator is not the author and so the choice of using such a word is not necessarily authorial carelessness but may actually be intended to say something about the narrator/viewpoint character, etc., etc., and so how while I am aware of the ramifications of [word], I still chose to have the viewpoint character use it to convey a specific frame of mind and description.
The commenter replied and said that none of that matters and I need to utterly remove [word] from my vocabulary.
So I wrote back and said I was pretty sure they were fucking with me, and I’m done with the conversation, because you know what? I’m actually pretty informed on the issues behind that particular word, it is something I do consider and am concerned with, and I don’t know this person from Adam, they haven’t ever commented on anything I’ve ever written or participated in any discussions I’ve read/partaken in, and they’ve shown me no evidence that they’re *not* a troll.
I just can’t get over how [word] needs to be removed from language but [word]phobia (there are other synonyms to refer to this same mindset that wouldn’t involve using the to-be-banned word, so that was also a deliberate choice of word usage on the commenter’s part) is totally fine?
Like, fuck you, think that through before you lecture me about word choice. And I’m still about a thousand percent sure you’re just looking for shit to start trouble about, and I’m all set. I’m feeling real shitty in general and shitty about my writing in specific and I am not going to devote energy to this kind of actually-stupid battle. Especially when, as I said, it’s something I do actually know a bit about and am concerned for and you are clearly just here to start shit. I am not engaging further. Ugh.
